Guan Yin is short for Guan Shi Yin, which means “the one who hears the sounds or cries of the world.” As Guan Shi Yin Pusa, she is known as the Bodhisattva of Compassion. Compassion is the heartfelt awareness of the suffering of others with a sincere desire to alleviate it.
Because of Guan Yin’s deep compassion and mercy, she is a champion of the unfortunate, sick and needy. She has made many vows that demonstrate her deep and total commitment to end suffering, and there are a multitude of heart touching stories from those who have called upon her in times of need, to save their lives, restore health and more.
Though Guan Yin calls herself a bodhisattva – representing one who has not quite reached enlightenment, she is truly a very high-level Buddha. In 2003, Guan Yin was further uplifted and her name was changed to Ling Hui Sheng Shi (pronounced ling hway sheng shr). “Ling” means soul. “Hui” means intelligence. “Sheng” means saint. “Shi” means servant.
Historically, Guan Yin’s Lineage has consisted of bodhisattvas that have committed themselves to helping end suffering through the practice of compassion. Compassion is a powerful quality that awakens us to the purpose of life and provides the necessary inner resources to accomplish great acts. Master Sha teaches that the Tao Quality of Greatest Compassion strengthens willpower and boosts energy, stamina, vitality and immunity. With true compassion, like Guan Yin, we can serve humanity unconditionally. To serve unconditionally is to accumulate virtue and increase our soul standing in Heaven.
In this Retreat, we will receive profound wisdom, practices and blessings to deepen our commitment to service through the practice of compassion and more. We will learn about Guan Yin’s Lineage and how one may receive the honor of being a Guan Yin Lineage Holder.
More specifically, participants of this retreat will:
Master Sha and the Guan Yin Lineage
When Master Sha was a young boy, Guan Yin appeared to him and taught him the Da Bei Zhou – the Big Compassion Mantra – a mantra of 87 lines which are the names of 87 Buddhas. In the Buddhist teaching it is said that Da Bei Zhou can heal “eighty-four thousand kinds of sickness”. According to the teaching, this is because the Da Bei Zhou has the power to transform karmic blockages with great love and light.
Guan Yin’s spiritual father, Qian Guang Jing Wang (which means thousand lights quietness king) taught Da Bei Zhou to Guan Yin. When he chanted it for her, the 87 Buddhas appeared and the light they brought was beyond comprehension. Guan Yin was so moved that she vowed to spread Da Bei Zhou in all her lifetimes. This vow deeply touched Qian Guang Jing Wang, who then transmitted the one thousand spiritual hands and one thousand spiritual eyes to Guan Yin.
Master Sha has chanted Da Bei Zhou his entire life and is honored to be a Guan Yin Lineage Holder. Guan Yin and her lineage use their spiritual powers to help all sentient beings end their suffering. Her lineage is filled with buddhas and bodhisattvas committed to compassionate service.
Master Sha’s main teaching is that the purpose of life is to serve. Join this special event to develop compassionate service in your life and for the opportunity to receive blessings and honors from Guan Yin, including to become a Guan Yin Lineage Holder.
