When Master Sha was four years old,Guan Yin (known throughout China and the east as Guan Shr Yin Pusa) came to teach him the Da Bei Zhou, and he has been chanting the Da Bei Zhou ever since. In recent years Master Sha began offering teachings and blessings to his students  so that they could prepare to become a part of the Guan Yin Lineage.

Who is Guan Yin?

Guan Yin is short for Guan Shi Yin, which means “the one who hears the sounds or cries of the world.” As Guan Shi Yin Pusa, she is known as the Bodhisattva of Compassion.

There are different stories and legends about Guan Yin’s origins and gender. It is said that Guan Yin can incarnate at will, in any form, to save beings from suffering and ignorance. In the west and much of China, she is often depicted and referred to as female.

Guan Yin is revered around the world for her compassion and mercy. She made many vows that demonstrate her deep and total commitment to end suffering. She will help any soul who calls her name. There are a multitude of heart touching stories from those who have called upon her in times of need, to save their lives, restore health and more.

In Taoism, records indicate that Guan Yin became immortal. Yet she is very humble. Guan Yin calls herself a bodhisattva – representing one who is not quite at total enlightenment, but she is indeed a Buddha. In 2003, Guan Yin’s new name – Ling Hui Sheng Shi (pronounced ling hway sheng shr), was revealed to humanity. “Ling” means soul. “Hui” means intelligence. “Sheng” means saint. “Shi” means servant.

What is the Da Bei Zhou?

Da Bei Zhou (pronounced dah bay joe) is the Big Compassion Mantra. “Da” means big. “Bei” means compassion. “Zhou” means mantra. It is said that Guan Yin learned to chant the Da Bei Zhou from her spiritual father, Qian Guang Jing Wang. She was so profoundly touched by its power that she vowed to chant it every day.

Guan Yin and the Da Bei Zhou

What does the Da Bei Zhou – the Big Compassion Mantra, really mean? And what is Guan Yin’s connection with it? Here is an excerpt from Master Sha’s latest book – Soul Mind Body Science Systemthat explains a little of this history:

In Guan Yin’s time, she met her spiritual father, Qian Guang Jing Wang. “Qian” means thousand.” Guang” means light. “Jing” means quietness. “Wang” means king. “Qian Guang Jing Wang” literally means thousand lights quietness king.

Qian Guang Jing Wang taught Da Bei Zhou to Guan Yin. Da Bei Zhou consists of eighty-seven lines. Each line of the mantra is the name of a buddha. Millions and billions of Buddhists in history deeply honor Da Bei Zhou. In their teaching, Da Bei Zhou can heal eighty-four thousand kinds of sickness.

When Qian Guang Jing Wang chanted Da Bei Zhou for Guan Yin, eighty-seven buddhas appeared. The light they brought was beyond comprehension. Guan Yin was deeply moved by the love, compassion, and light of these eighty-seven buddhas. She bowed down to her teacher and vowed, “I will spread Da Bei Zhou for the rest of this lifetime and in all of my future lifetimes.”

Guan Yin’s vow was so sincere, so profound, and so deep. Because her vow deeply touched and moved Qian Guang Jing Wang’s heart, he then transmitted one thousand spiritual hands and one thousand spiritual eyes to Guan Yin. Pp. 212-213

The 87 Buddhas

Like Guan Yin, the 87 Buddha’s of the Da Bei Zhou are enlightened beings who are committed to helping humanity and all sentient beings to be free of suffering. They each have their own unique gifts and blessing power. In some of the historical literature, the 87 Buddha’s are regarded as different manifestations of Guan Yin.
