Guan Yin is short for Guan Shi Yin, which means “the one who hears the sounds or cries of the world.” As Guan Shi Yin Pusa, she is known as the Bodhisattva of Compassion. Compassion is the heartfelt awareness of the suffering of others with a sincere desire to alleviate it.
Because of Guan Yin’s deep compassion and mercy, she is a champion of the unfortunate, sick and needy. She has made many vows that demonstrate her deep and total commitment to end suffering, and there are a multitude of heart touching stories from those who have called upon her in times of need, to save their lives, restore health and more.
Though Guan Yin calls herself a bodhisattva – representing one who has not quite reached enlightenment, she is truly a very high-level Buddha. In 2003, Guan Yin was further uplifted and her name was changed to Ling Hui Sheng Shi (pronounced ling hway sheng shr). “Ling” means soul. “Hui” means intelligence. “Sheng” means saint. “Shi” means servant.

Historically, Guan Yin’s Lineage has consisted of bodhisattvas that have committed themselves to helping end suffering through the practice of compassion. Compassion is a powerful quality that awakens us to the purpose of life and provides the necessary inner resources to accomplish great acts. With true compassion, like Guan Yin, we can serve humanity unconditionally. To serve unconditionally is to accumulate virtue and increase our soul standing in Heaven.

In this retreat, you will receive profound wisdom, practices and blessings to deepen your commitment to service through the practice of compassion and more. We invite you to join with us to celebrate the coming birthday of Guan Yin and to learn more compassion in your life.
